FAQ

We'll try to answer some frequent questions below.  If you have others, just call or email.

Can I have a puzzle created, using artwork other than a photograph?

Absolutely! The art work used in creating many of the puzzles that I have cut, has been quite varied.
Art prints of famous (and not so famous) paintings, personal art work, calendar art, award certificates, diplomas, cartoons, children's sketches or paintings, magazine covers, etc., are a few examples.
I also have a fairly large inventory of artwork prints and high definition CDs of famous paintings by the "old masters", should you have a favorite in mind.

If you have valuable art work that is irreplaceable, please have a good quality color scan or copy made, and send that to me instead.

What's the history behind jigsaw puzzles?

Hand cut wooden puzzles have been produced for almost 250 years.  It is not uncommon to see vintage wooden puzzles that are well over a century old being offered for sale at estate auctions or by antique dealers.

Does it matter if my picture is from a digital or film camera?

Nope.  As long as the photograph has sufficient resolution to print properly in the size of the puzzle that you have selected, the original camera source does not matter at all.

May I submit photographs in electronic formats other than JPG?

Maybe.  I am not a graphics or computer expert.  If I can readily open the file in your format, I will try to use it.  If not, I may need to ask you to send it to me as a JPG.  When sending a file in a format other than JPG, I'd suggest you send me the file by email, first, to make sure that I can use it.  If so, then send your payment for the puzzle.

May I submit an actual photographic print instead of a JPG?

Yes, but our first choice would be working from JPGs or negatives but we can work from prints or art work.

If you are sending us a photographic print, please note that  you will obtain better results if  your photograph has a matte, satin or semi-gloss finish rather than a gloss finish.

If you do not have a scanner at home, you should be able to get photographs made into a JPG at large office supply or department stores.

We ask that you not send treasured original photographs or art through the mails and run the risk of loss or damage.  We are not responsible for loss or damage to images sent to us.  It would be safer to send a good quality color copy.

How much resolution do you need in the JPG?

The more, the better, within reason.  Pictures from recent digital cameras should be just fine.  Most scans from photographs will be, too, but if you are looking to make a large puzzle from a small photo, the scan will need to be made to a sufficient size for your desired finished puzzle size.

For what ages are the puzzles appropriate?

Puzzle pieces, like many other small objects are a potential choking hazard for small children.  When order a puzzle for a child, this is a very important factor to consider!

Always keep puzzle pieces out of the reach of small children.

We can, however, make puzzles suitable for almost any age.   We can make a puzzle with a small number of child-sized pieces, larger in size, for younger children.  We can make puzzles with smaller pieces, or even puzzles with intricate, indented borders and many pieces to challenge teens and adults.  See our price chart for rectangular puzzles, depending upon the size and piece count.

What is the usual turnaround time?

I will normally have your puzzle finished and ready for shipping about a  week after your check and photograph have reached me.  If you need the puzzle by a specific date, please email and ask.  I am retired and this is not a full-time business but I will try to make your puzzle as soon as possible.  I may be able to work with you to get you your puzzle faster than my usual turnaround time, although a rush job may involve a slight surcharge.

Can I get the puzzle in a gift box?

Yes, we have several deluxe boxes to choose from for an additional $12 to $15.  See our Boxes page.  And, if you choose not to order a deluxe box, even our standard box, included in the base price, can make a nice gift presentation.

Can I get puzzles in a larger size than those listed on your price list?

Definitely.  Heirloom Puzzle can make puzzles up to 20" x 30".  Contact me for a quote.  All unusual sizes, and all shapes other than the rectangles and hearts on the price list must be specially quoted.  The same is true for any scalloped or ornate edge requests.

Is there any discount for ordering multiple puzzles?

Call or email me and we'll try to work something out.

Is shipping and handling included in your quoted prices?

Yes.  Shipping to anywhere in the continental United States, via USPS Priority mail, is included in the puzzle price.  There is no extra cost.

If you need the puzzle shipped outside the continental United States, please contact me for a price quotation, first.

Are ornate edges included in the basic puzzle price?

No.  Ornate or scalloped edges require additional work and will require an additional charge.  The prices shown on our price list are prices for straight, rectangular borders (or, in the case of the heart, a smooth, curved border).

What forms of payment do you accept?

Heirloom Puzzle will accept payment via  U.S. certified bank check, money order, or personal checks, payable to "Heirloom Puzzle".

I will wait until a personal check "clears'" (usually 1 to 2 days) before  shipping. Payment via the other methods will result in same day shipping.
